Beach Day Haircare: How to Protect Your Curls from Saltwater & Sun
Beach days are good for the soul, but can be rough on natural hair. Saltwater, sun, and sand can leave your coils and curls dry, tangled, and damaged if you’re not prepared. Here’s exactly how I prep and protect my type 4 hair for the beach, so I can slay in the sun and come home with my hair intact.
Step 1: Pre-Beach Prep (The Game Changer)
Saturate your hair with fresh water before you leave home. This helps reduce how much saltwater your strands soak up.
Apply a leave-in conditioner + seal with oil to create a protective barrier from the saltwater, sun and debris.
Step 2: Style for Protection
Go for low-manipulation styles like:
2 braids
A tucked bun
Flat twists
A cute head wrap
Try to loose wash & gos as they tangle easily when wet.
Step 3: At the Beach
Reapply moisture mist throughout the day
Keep a satin-lined hat or scarf handy for added sun protection
Avoid tight hairstyles or elastic bands, your coils and curls swell in humidity!
Step 4: Post-Beach Wash Routine
Rinse with clean water ASAP
Clarify gently (try a sulfate-free shampoo or clay wash)
Deep condition to restore moisture and bounce
Bonus Tip:
Try aloe vera juice in your post-beach routine, it helps soothe the scalp and smooth frizz naturally.
Final Thoughts:
Beach day curls don’t have to suffer. With the right prep, you can enjoy the sun and surf without paying the price in tangles and breakage.
